Ownership & Organization

Dr. Michael Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D. founded The Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. in 1999.

As both a Board Certified Physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services and as an established Medical Researcher, Dr. Kaplan provides leadership and direction to the staff of Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. The idea of developing an Institute in Massage Therapy emerged as Dr. Kaplan observed how many of his patients were helped by therapeutic massage. Convinced of the benefits of massage therapy as a beneficial adjunct to traditional medicine, Dr. Kaplan envisioned the formation of an institute where individuals could:
info Learn about Massage Therapy and Bodywork
info Obtain certification as Professional Massage Therapists
info Conduct research on the benefits of massage therapy for health, wellness and improvement of the lives of patients with illnesses
info Understand how massage is a beneficial tool through the various stages of the health-illness continuum
info Maintain their certification and be updated on the latest information about massage therapy
info Also select from a variety of Continuing Education Programs, other than the 500 Hour Massage Therapy and BodyWork Training Program

As Medical Director, Dr. Michael Kaplan provides leadership and direction to the faculty and staff of The Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. Dr. Kaplan and his staff are committed to providing an excellent learning environment in which students can gain the skills and confidence needed to become Professional Massage Therapists. Each course at the Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. adheres to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork's philosophy and definition of continuing education.

The Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. is MHEC (Maryland Higher Education Commission) Approved, NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork) Approved, ABHES (Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) Approved, Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners Approved, A member in good standing of the American Massage Therapy Association Council of Schools, A School Member in good standing of the Associated Massage & Bodywork Professionals and a Continuing Education Provider.

The Student Clinic receives patient referrals from The Rehabilitation Team as well from self referrals by word of mouth or marketing. Students learn theoretical basis of Massage Therapy, and first practice their newly learned skills on their peers, then later go on to observe massage therapy act as complementary adjunct to health care, benefiting a broad array of patient conditions at the student clinic.
